Poll: Economic Issues Reign as Top Priority to Americans

Economic issues remain the top priority for Americans as the midterm elections approach, according to a weekly survey from the Economist/YouGov.

The survey asked Americans which issue matters most to them, offering options ranging from jobs and the economy to foreign policy. Overall, economic concerns dominated. Inflation and prices ranked first, with 26 percent of respondents selecting it as their top issue. Jobs and the economy followed at 13 percent, while healthcare came in third at 12 percent. Immigration was next at nine percent, followed by national security at seven percent and taxes and government spending at six percent. Other issues, including foreign policy, education, abortion, civil rights, guns, and criminal justice reform, each received five percent or less.

There were bipartisan similarities in top concerns. A plurality of Republicans, Democrats, and independents—25 percent, 25 percent, and 28 percent respectively—identified inflation and prices as their most important issue. Beyond that, priorities differed among groups.

For Republicans, immigration ranked second at 20 percent, followed by national security at 12 percent. Among independents, jobs and the economy were second at 15 percent. For Democrats, healthcare was the second most important issue, with 16 percent support.

The survey was conducted from April 10 to April 13, 2026, among 1,748 respondents, including 1,573 registered voters.

The findings come as Republicans prepare for the midterm elections, aiming to maintain majorities in both the House and Senate and continue advancing President Donald Trump’s agenda.

Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters said Democrats would focus on obstruction, including potential impeachment efforts, while Republicans aim to maintain momentum and focus on economic issues. He also stated that the president plans to campaign across the country and emphasized the importance of engaging voters directly.
