Prince Andrew Arrested Over Epstein Documents, Released Under Investigation — Even Royals Can’t Dodge the Spotlight

Former royal Prince Andrew, officially Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, was released from police custody Thursday night after being arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office linked to allegations that he sent confidential government documents to Jeffrey Epstein. The king’s younger brother, who turned 66 the same day, was questioned for hours by detectives from Thames Valley Police after authorities said earlier this month they were examining claims he passed sensitive material to Epstein while serving as a trade envoy.

The arrest of the senior royal — eighth in line to the throne — is unprecedented in modern times. In a statement, King Charles said he had learned of the news “with the deepest concern,” adding that authorities would have the family’s “full and wholehearted support and cooperation.” He made it clear the law must take its course, while continuing his public duties. Translation: no royal red carpet this time.

A Reuters witness saw Andrew leaving a police station in Aylsham, eastern England, just after 7 p.m. local time, surrounded by photographers and television crews. A photo taken after his release showed him sitting in a car, visibly shaken — which is understandable when the headlines are louder than the paparazzi.

Police later said the arrested man had been “released under investigation.” Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright stated that an inquiry into alleged misconduct in public office had now been formally opened, noting the high level of public interest and promising updates when appropriate.

Mountbatten-Windsor has denied wrongdoing connected to Epstein and said he regrets their friendship. His office did not respond to requests for comment, and he has not spoken publicly since the release of millions of pages of U.S. government documents tied to Epstein. Those files suggested he forwarded reports about Vietnam, Singapore, and other locations to Epstein in 2010 while serving as the government’s Special Representative for Trade and Investment — a role he left in 2011 after his ties to Epstein first emerged.

Police activity was also reported at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate, where Andrew now lives, and at the Windsor estate mansion where he previously resided. A conviction for misconduct in public office carries a potential life sentence and would be handled in Crown Court.

In 2022, Andrew settled a civil lawsuit in the United States brought by Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexual abuse as a teenager. Police stressed the current investigation is not related to that or to any sexual misconduct allegation.

The former prince was stripped of royal duties in 2019 and later lost his titles and honors amid growing controversy. Additional scrutiny continues, including a report from anti-monarchy group Republic alleging involvement in trafficking a woman to Britain in 2010, which police said they are assessing. U.S. lawmakers have also said he should testify about what he knew regarding Epstein.

This case marks another serious chapter for a once-powerful royal figure and shows that even the highest-profile names face investigation when allegations surface. The process is now in the hands of law enforcement and the courts — and while the story is far from over, the rule of law moving forward is the one thing everyone can agree is the right path.
