Yet, amidst the intensified attacks on civilian infrastructure, a different narrative emerged: a struggling Vladimir Putin, reportedly "panicked" as Ukrainian forces push deeper into Russian territory.

This assessment comes from Carrie Filipetti, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and executive director of the Vandenberg Coalition. Filipetti described a Russian leader growing increasingly anxious, resorting to brutal, indiscriminate strikes on Ukrainian citizens as a desperate attempt to break their will.

The anniversary, commemorating Ukraine's declaration of independence from the Soviet Union on August 24, 1991, arrived with heightened security risks. Ukrainian authorities had warned of potential terrorist attacks, and true to form, Russia delivered a grim reminder of its tactics. A recent drone strike on a shopping center in President Zelenskyy's hometown of Kryvyi Rih left at least 16 dead and 130 injured – a clear targeting of civilian life, not military assets.

Putin, once boasting of a swift "special military operation," now faces a protracted conflict and growing domestic vulnerabilities. Ukraine’s strategic strikes on Russian economic targets, including key warehouses, are disrupting Moscow's logistics and causing significant headaches for the Kremlin. This is the very "Pandora's box" Putin warned about, yet it's his own making.

"The war with Russia has seen a lot of advances for the Ukrainians over this year," Filipetti explained. "They've recently been able to actually penetrate much deeper into Russian territory, including close to Moscow and St. Petersburg."

This military success, Filipetti argues, has driven Russia into a corner. "Their success on the military front has now resulted in the Russians getting panicked and starting to attack more inside Ukraine and what they're really trying to do is weaken their will and capabilities," she stated, adding that Putin "gets very anxious when he's put in a corner."

The world witnessed a defiant Ukraine, with European leaders joining President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv to underscore continued international solidarity. Zelenskyy’s message was unequivocal: Ukraine seeks peace but will never surrender to Moscow's outrageous demands.

"It's really important that our adversaries of China, Russia, Iran, and others understand that if they invade another country unilaterally, there are going to be consequences, not rewards." Putin’s delusional fantasy of a "weeks-long" campaign has dissolved into a costly, humiliating entanglement.
