A Boeing 747 gifted by Qatar is reportedly on track to join the presidential Air Force One fleet by the Fourth of July, potentially giving President Donald Trump a newly upgraded aircraft just in time for America’s 250th anniversary celebrations. Not exactly the “doom and gloom” story Trump critics were hoping for.
According to officials familiar with the program, the luxury jet — accepted by the White House in 2025 — is undergoing rapid modifications to meet strict presidential and military standards. The U.S. Air Force tapped L3Harris to handle the overhaul, which includes advanced communications systems, missile defense capabilities, and anti-spying protections.
Sources say there was even discussion about delivering the aircraft weeks earlier to coincide with Trump’s birthday on June 14. That would have certainly sent cable news networks into a full meltdown for at least a week.
Democrats and so-called “good government” activists criticized the acceptance of the 13-year-old aircraft from Qatar’s royal family, claiming it could create conflicts of interest. Trump, however, brushed off the outrage, saying it would be “stupid” to reject the offer.
And frankly, many Americans are probably wondering why taxpayers should foot an even bigger bill when the current Air Force One replacement project has already spiraled into a financial disaster.
The official replacement effort — Boeing’s conversion of two Boeing 747-8 aircraft into next-generation presidential jets — is now four years behind schedule. Originally tied to a fixed-price $3.9 billion contract signed in 2018, costs have exploded past $5 billion, with Boeing reportedly absorbing billions in losses from the troubled program.
To stabilize the project, Boeing brought in Steve Sullivan, a former Northrop Grumman executive known for his work on the B-21 bomber program.
Meanwhile, the Air Force confirmed the Qatar aircraft has already completed modification work and flight testing and is currently being painted. Officials also unveiled a new patriotic paint scheme featuring red, white, dark blue, and gold — a design Trump had long supported after an earlier version was scrapped in 2022.
The updated look will eventually be applied to the future VC-25B fleet, replacing the classic light-blue Kennedy-era design that has represented Air Force One for decades.
The modernization effort goes beyond presidential aircraft as well. Four Boeing 757-200 planes used by the vice president and other top officials will also receive the updated paint scheme.
Additionally, the Air Force recently purchased two former Lufthansa Boeing 747-8i aircraft for $400 million — one for training crews and maintainers, and another to provide spare parts as the current fleet, which has been flying since 1990, approaches retirement.
Despite years of delays, ballooning costs, and nonstop political criticism, the project appears to finally be moving forward. And with America preparing to celebrate its 250th birthday, the arrival of a modernized Air Force One fleet is shaping up to be another major patriotic moment for the country.
