“No,” Rubio said, explaining that the visit had been planned well in advance and wasn’t tied to any recent developments. In other words, not everything revolves around media narratives—surprising, right?
Instead, Rubio emphasized that there are broader and more substantive issues on the agenda. He pointed to shared concerns between the United States and the Vatican, especially when it comes to religious freedom around the world.
He highlighted the pope’s recent trip to Africa, noting the rapid growth of the Church in the region and the importance of protecting religious liberty in various parts of the globe. According to Rubio, those are the kinds of discussions that actually matter—and the ones he intends to focus on.
