People smugglers transported a record 230 illegal migrants across the English Channel from France in a single mega-dinghy early Monday morning, according to reports.

The vessel came ashore near Dover, marking the largest number of migrants ever recorded arriving in one boat. The UK government issued another warning that such “reckless and dangerous tactics employed by criminal gangs” will not be tolerated.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s Labour government has previously promised to tackle the crossings, including earlier this month after more than 150 people were rescued when their boat caught fire and they were returned to France. Specific new measures beyond cooperation with French authorities have yet to be detailed.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage described the incident as further evidence of a national security emergency. “At 2.30am this morning a boat carrying 230 people was taken into Dover. This is a record number in a single vessel. It’s yet more proof that this illegal invasion is a national security emergency,” he posted on X.

Reports indicate people traffickers currently charge around £2,000 ($2,700) per person for the crossing. With estimated costs of about £10,000 for the trip, the single boat could have generated roughly £450,000 ($607,000) in profit for the gangs.

The overnight arrivals bring the weekend total to more than 900 migrants reaching Britain, adding to the more than 200,000 who have already made the journey in recent years.
