The Trump administration has taken steps to limit foreign access to some of the most advanced artificial intelligence systems developed in the United States, according to a report published Friday.
Axios reported that the restrictions target Anthropic’s most powerful AI models, known as Mythos 5 and Fable 5. The move would bar foreign governments, companies, and individuals from accessing the systems under new export controls.
According to the report, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick sent a letter on Friday to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei informing him that the two models will be subject to those export restrictions.
The decision places cutting-edge AI technology into the same broader category of strategic assets that U.S. policymakers have increasingly sought to regulate in recent years, particularly as global competition in artificial intelligence continues to intensify.
Supporters of tighter controls argue that advanced AI systems represent not just commercial tools, but potential national security assets with global implications if widely distributed without oversight.
The administration’s move signals a continuation of efforts to maintain tighter control over the international flow of sensitive technologies as AI capabilities rapidly advance.
As competition in the AI sector accelerates, policy decisions like these are likely to play an increasingly central role in shaping who gets access—and who does not.
