Ric Grenell to Step Down as President of the Trump Kennedy Center Ahead of Major Renovation

Ric Grenell will step down Monday as president of the Trump Kennedy Center, as the nation’s premier performing arts venue prepares for a massive renovation project expected to shut down the complex for the next two years.

Grenell, a former U.S. ambassador to Germany and longtime ally of Donald Trump, has overseen the 55-year-old cultural institution during a critical transition period while officials finalized plans for the sweeping overhaul of the facility in Washington, D.C.

President Trump confirmed the leadership change in a post on Truth Social, announcing that Matt Floca, the center’s current vice president of facilities operations, will take over the role.

“Ric Grenell has done an excellent job in helping to coordinate various elements of the Center during the transition period, and I want to thank him for the outstanding work he has done,” Trump wrote.

While stepping down from the arts leadership role, Grenell isn’t exactly disappearing from the scene. He will continue serving the president as special envoy for special missions, remaining a trusted voice in the administration’s foreign policy efforts. Not bad for someone who critics love to underestimate.

The leadership shift comes as the Trump Kennedy Center moves toward one of the largest construction projects in its history. The extensive renovation plan will require a full closure of the complex while upgrades are carried out across the sprawling venue along the Potomac River.

Widely regarded as the country’s flagship performing arts venue, the center hosts hundreds of performances every year, including opera, ballet, theater productions, concerts, and its well-known honors ceremony celebrating lifetime achievement in the arts.

In December, the center’s board of trustees voted to rename the venue the Trump Kennedy Center, a move supporters said recognized President Trump’s influence on the institution and his broader support for the arts. Critics complained, of course—but critics tend to complain about everything these days.

Grenell took the helm during the early planning phase of the renovation and helped guide preparations for the upcoming shutdown. The temporary closure will inevitably affect the center’s normal performance calendar, though officials are exploring ways to relocate certain shows and events during the construction period.

Incoming president Matt Floca has already played a major role behind the scenes. As the official overseeing facilities operations, he has been deeply involved in managing the building’s infrastructure and preparing the site for the upcoming overhaul. His familiarity with the complex will likely prove essential once construction begins.

Officials say the renovation will modernize the aging facility and improve the experience for performers and audiences alike. Planned upgrades include improvements to performance halls, backstage areas, technical systems, and public spaces used by visitors.

Grenell’s departure marks another step in the center’s evolution as it prepares for this major transformation. And if the project succeeds—as supporters believe it will—the Trump Kennedy Center could emerge stronger than ever, proving once again that bold leadership and long-term vision can elevate even the nation’s most iconic institutions.
