Authorities investigating the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie are facing serious hurdles, and Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos is now acknowledging that advanced DNA technology may not deliver quick answers. In an interview on NBC Nightly News, Nanos said his department is not currently pursuing any new suspects, despite reports from local businesses claiming the FBI showed them lists of possible individuals tied to the case.
According to the sheriff, the DNA found inside Guthrie’s Arizona home is “mixed,” meaning it contains genetic material from more than one person. That may sound high-tech and impressive, but in reality it makes identifying a suspect far more complicated when running samples through national databases. The Florida lab handling the evidence has warned that separating and analyzing those samples could take weeks, months, or even up to a year. So much for instant justice powered by futuristic science.
Nanos stressed that investigators are still working other leads in the weeks-long probe into Guthrie’s abduction. He said progress is being made in identifying personal items connected to her disappearance, beyond just the backpack already recovered. Clothing such as shoes, pants, and possibly a jacket are now part of the focus as authorities try to piece together her final movements.
Guthrie was last seen the night of Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026, after being dropped off at her home in the Catalina Foothills area near Tucson. Since then, frustration has grown over the lack of arrests, something the sheriff says he understands all too well. He admitted he wants results as fast as anyone, but warned that complex cases rarely move at the speed people demand.
While critics grow impatient, investigators insist the work continues behind the scenes. The case highlights both the promise and limits of modern forensic tools, reminding the public that even cutting-edge DNA science isn’t magic. The focus remains on finding answers and bringing closure, and officials say they are determined to keep pushing forward until that happens.
