Texas Democrats Tear Each Other Apart as Anti-Trump Congressman Al Green Gets Booted in Heated Runoff

Everything’s bigger in Texas — including Democrat infighting.

Longtime Congressman Al Green, one of President Donald Trump’s loudest critics on Capitol Hill and a man seemingly more focused on impeachment attempts than fixing problems back home, was defeated Tuesday in a brutal Democratic runoff by fellow Texas Democrat Christian Menefee. And yes, the irony is impossible to ignore.

The showdown happened after Texas redistricting reshaped congressional boundaries around Houston, forcing two sitting House Democrats into the same race for the heavily Democratic 18th Congressional District. In other words, Democrats ended up cannibalizing their own seats. Outstanding strategic planning, as always.

Green, who built a national profile through repeated attempts to impeach Trump during both presidencies, found himself unable to survive the political reshuffling. Despite years in Congress and nonstop anti-Trump headlines, voters ultimately sided with Menefee in the runoff battle.

The race quickly became one of the more intense Democrat-versus-Democrat contests in Texas politics this year, as both candidates fought to preserve their careers after the district maps were redrawn around Houston. Redistricting once again proved that political survival in Washington often depends less on cable news appearances and more on whether your district still exists after the lines are moved.

For conservatives, Green’s defeat marks the fall of one of the most relentless Trump antagonists in Congress. While Democrats continue obsessing over attacking Trump at every opportunity, many Americans are far more focused on the economy, security, and common-sense leadership.

At the end of the day, voters made their choice, and the political landscape in Texas keeps moving in a direction that should have Democrats very nervous heading into the future. Meanwhile, the America First movement keeps proving it has staying power far beyond Washington’s endless political theater.
