The Texas man who allegedly opened fire near the National Mall in Washington, D.C., earlier this week is now facing multiple serious federal charges after a dangerous confrontation with U.S. Secret Service agents just blocks from the White House.
According to U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeannine Pirro, 45-year-old Michael Marx of Texas has been charged with three federal felonies following Monday afternoon’s shooting incident near 15th Street and Independence Avenue.
Authorities say Marx was confronted by Secret Service agents near the area where the vice president’s motorcade route passes through the National Mall. Instead of complying, investigators say he opened fire, triggering an immediate armed response from federal agents.
Secret Service personnel returned fire, striking Marx and taking him into custody. Officials confirmed he was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident unfolded only about four blocks south of the White House, immediately raising serious concerns about security near one of the most heavily protected areas in the country. Thankfully, agents reacted quickly before the situation escalated even further. That’s exactly why highly trained federal protection teams exist — despite what anti-law enforcement activists love to claim every election season.
Federal officials have not yet publicly detailed the exact felony charges, but the case is expected to move quickly through the federal court system given the location of the shooting and the involvement of Secret Service personnel.
The shooting also serves as another reminder of the increasingly dangerous security environment facing federal officials and law enforcement officers across the country. Incidents near the White House and National Mall are treated with the highest level of seriousness, especially when firearms are involved near protected government operations or motorcade routes.
For now, investigators continue piecing together Marx’s motives and movements leading up to the confrontation. But one thing is already clear: the rapid response from Secret Service agents likely prevented an even more dangerous situation in the heart of the nation’s capital.
