U.S. Shows Flexibility as Iran Pushes for New Nuclear Deal Terms

The United States is reportedly showing some flexibility regarding Iran maintaining limited peaceful nuclear activities under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency, according to a senior Iranian source who spoke with Reuters on Monday.

The discussions appear to be part of broader negotiations involving Iran’s frozen assets, regional tensions, and ongoing efforts tied to ending conflict in the region. According to the source, however, Washington has so far only agreed to release about one-quarter of Iran’s frozen assets through a phased timetable — a position Iran is pushing back against as talks continue.

Iran is reportedly seeking more favorable terms from the United States and wants Washington to reconsider both the restrictions on its assets and the framework surrounding its nuclear activities.

In its latest proposal, Iran has again centered its demands around ending the current war, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and lifting maritime sanctions. The Strait remains one of the world’s most critical shipping routes, particularly for global energy markets, so any developments tied to its operation immediately draw international attention.

As always, negotiations involving Iran come with plenty of diplomatic theater, vague promises, and carefully worded statements that somehow manage to say everything and nothing at the same time — a specialty in international politics that rivals Washington bureaucracy itself.

Still, any movement toward stability in the region and the reopening of key trade routes could have significant global economic implications. The situation remains fluid, but the fact that discussions are continuing signals that both sides are still searching for a workable path forward.
