More than 40 million Americans are preparing for a major winter storm expected to hammer the East Coast from Sunday into Monday, proving once again that Mother Nature doesn’t care about weekend plans. The nor’easter is forecast to dump heavy snow along the I-95 corridor, pushing forecasters to issue blizzard warnings across southern Delaware, the Jersey Shore, New York City, Long Island, and coastal Connecticut, according to ABC News.
In a social media post, the National Weather Service labeled nor’easters “Winter’s Fury,” warning that these storms are capable of burying massive populations under one to two feet of snow in a single day. Officials noted that nor’easters draw powerful winds and heavy moisture from the Atlantic, hitting hardest in the heavily populated stretch from Washington, D.C., to Boston — the famous I-95 Corridor where everyone lives and nobody wants to shovel.
Forecasters say some areas could see more than a foot of snow combined with strong, gusty winds as the storm pushes through. The system has even earned a name: Winter Storm Hernando, courtesy of The Weather Channel, which predicts peak snowfall on Sunday and Monday. Meteorologists expect low pressure to form offshore between the Delmarva Peninsula and the Carolinas before rapidly strengthening — possibly fast enough to qualify as a “bomb cyclone,” a term for a storm that intensifies at an extreme rate.
Senior meteorologist Carl Erickson of AccuWeather warned the storm will bring near-blizzard conditions and dangerous travel, especially overnight into Monday morning when the core of the nor’easter moves through. Snow is expected to taper off after daybreak Monday, but not before making its presence known in a big way.
