Freedom 250 Opens in Washington With Flyovers, Rodeos, and a Full-Scale Celebration of America

At a moment when much of American public life seems consumed by division, apology, and endless arguments about what the country got wrong, Washington is doing something different this week.

It is celebrating what America built.

The Great American State Fair officially opened in the nation’s capital this week, launching a multi-day celebration of the country’s 250th birthday with military flyovers, rodeos, state showcases, music, and an unmistakably patriotic message: America’s story is worth honoring.

President Donald Trump opened the event Wednesday evening with remarks centered on the nation’s founding and the principles that shaped it.

“Ten days from now, our country will celebrate one of the most monumental milestones in human history, marking 250 years of glorious American freedom,” Trump said.

He turned to the nation’s founding moment.

“In 1776 our founding fathers met in Philadelphia and changed the world forever and ever with a thing called the Declaration of Independence.”

Then Trump highlighted the idea at the center of the anniversary celebration.

“They proclaim the eternal truth that we are endowed by our Creator with the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We all made, and you know that, free and equal by the hand of Almighty God.”

The event, known as Freedom 250’s Great American State Fair, has been described as a modern version of a World’s Fair — less focused on looking outward and more focused on rediscovering what exists inside the country itself.

Across the National Mall, visitors can explore roughly 150 exhibits representing all 56 states and territories along with businesses, innovators, civic groups, and cultural organizations.

Organizers say the fair is designed to showcase “the very best of America” through state pavilions, industry exhibits, military performances, entertainment, daily programming, family attractions, and large public events.

The schedule reflects that theme.

Different days spotlight ideas such as “Land & Prosperity,” “Faith, Values, and Inspiration,” and other pillars tied to the country’s history and identity.

One of the opening moments came from above.

Social media videos captured aircraft participating in the ceremonial flyover over Washington, including footage from inside the cockpit shared by one participating pilot.

“Thank you America for all that you are and all that you will be,” the pilot wrote.

“Thank you for trusting me.”

He added a personal note that captured the spirit of the event.

“My college roommate and one of my best friends Joe Pitts was on my wing for this one. God Bless America and long live The Republic.”

That sentiment may explain why events like this resonate.

For years, Americans have been told patriotism should come with hesitation, national pride should come with disclaimers, and celebrating the country should begin with an apology.

Freedom 250 takes the opposite approach.

It starts from a simpler proposition: that the United States — imperfect, loud, ambitious, and free — remains one of the most extraordinary political experiments in human history.

And for at least a few days in Washington, that idea is not being whispered.

It is being celebrated.
