Survey Finds Most French Citizens Believe Crime Is ‘Out of Control’

A new survey suggests that concerns about crime have become a major issue across France, with a substantial majority of citizens expressing the belief that criminal activity is no longer being adequately contained.

According to a poll conducted by CSA for Le Journal du Dimanche, 72 percent of French respondents said they believe crime in the country is “out of control.” The findings reflect growing public anxiety over security, law enforcement, and the ability of authorities to maintain order.

Support for that view was strongest among voters aligned with the center-right Républicains party, where 92 percent agreed with the statement. Among supporters of the National Rally, 83 percent shared the same concern, while 62 percent of those backing President Emmanuel Macron’s political bloc also said crime was out of control.

The results indicate that worries about public safety extend well beyond traditional political divides. While conservative and right-leaning voters expressed the highest levels of concern, a majority of Macron supporters also reported similar fears, suggesting the issue has become a broad national concern.

The survey comes amid increasing discussion in France about crime, social stability, and the effectiveness of public institutions. Some commentators have warned that the country risks moving toward a situation described as “Mexinization,” a term used to express fears about weakening public authority and the erosion of government control in certain areas.

For many French citizens, the findings reflect frustration with what they perceive as a deteriorating security environment and a lack of effective solutions from political leaders. After all, when nearly three-quarters of a country's population agrees on a problem, it becomes much harder for politicians to argue that public concern is merely a matter of perception.

As debates over crime and public safety continue to shape French politics, pressure is likely to increase on government officials to demonstrate that they can restore confidence, strengthen law enforcement, and address the concerns of voters ahead of future elections.
