President Donald Trump stated that a planned ballroom at the White House is also serving as cover for a large-scale underground military project, drawing attention to what he described as a previously undisclosed development beneath the historic building.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said the ballroom structure would effectively function as a “shed” over a “massive military complex” currently under construction. He suggested that the project was originally intended to remain confidential but became public due to legal disputes and leaks.
According to his remarks, the military played a significant role in advocating for the ballroom renovations, with Trump noting that defense officials “wanted it more than anybody.” While he did not provide detailed specifications about the underground facility, his comments imply the development could be tied to national security infrastructure.
The location of the project has fueled speculation because of its proximity to the Presidential Emergency Operations Center (PEOC), a highly secure bunker designed to protect the president and key officials during emergencies. The PEOC, situated beneath the East Wing, has long been part of the White House’s emergency preparedness system.
Historically, such underground facilities date back to Franklin D. Roosevelt, who ordered the creation of a concealed bunker during World War II. Architect Lorenzo Winslow helped redesign parts of the East Wing to disguise the bunker and provide additional office space for wartime operations, establishing a precedent for combining functional security features with outwardly civilian structures.
Reports surrounding the new ballroom project have also pointed to heightened secrecy during construction. Federal employees were reportedly instructed not to photograph or share details of demolition work, citing concerns that images could reveal sensitive structural or security-related information.
The ballroom itself is said to be a privately funded project, with costs estimated between $300 million and $400 million. Contributions have reportedly come from major corporations and wealthy donors, including defense-related companies such as Lockheed Martin, Booz Allen Hamilton, and Palantir Technologies. Their involvement has further raised questions about the potential purpose and scope of the underground complex.
While Trump framed the project as a strategic initiative tied to national security, no detailed public documentation has been released outlining its full capabilities or mission. As a result, the development has sparked debate and speculation about transparency, security priorities, and the evolving infrastructure beneath one of the most iconic government buildings in the world.
